HOW’S THE ATMOSPHERE WHEN I WORK WITH CLIENTS

____________________________________________________________________________

The rapport building process is one of my favorite parts of the therapeutic process and It is also one of the most important parts in building the foundation of a therapeutic relationship. I will meet you (the client) where you are and incorporate your interests (i.e. music art, reading, etc. ) as part of the therapeutic process. Individual sessions are where we will process your experiences and begin the work. What we do in session (learning skills, techniques and more) is equally as important as the work you will do (practicing those skills) outside of the session! It has been said that laughter is medicine, so I believe in allowing humor to be part of the process when it naturally shows up. We have enough serious things happening  in our lives, so let’s be in the moment together. I believe that my job is to provide a safe space for you, to provide deep listening,  and to be mindfully present in the here and now with you (the client).

“Deep listening is the kind of listening that can help relieve the suffering of another person... You listen with only one purpose: to help him or her to empty their heart. ”-Thich Nhat Hanh VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST MONK, TEACHER, AUTHOR, PEACE ACTIVIST

MY EXPERIENCE & BACKGROUND

______________________________________________________________

I am an African American/Black woman and I believe that representation matters in mental health services, especially as stigmas around mental health are being addressed and as Black people/people of color are seeking therapy more often in today’s society. I am an Associate Clinical Social Work and received my Master of  Social Work degree from Simmons University. I have practiced as a clinical therapist in a school-based setting for grades k-12th as well as transitional age youth (ages 16-24 yo) since 2016. I have worked with children in different roles over the past 14 years, as my undergraduate degree is in child, adolescent, and family studies. In addition,  I have a minor in women and gender studies and am passionate about working with women and young girls.

My goal when working with my clients is to help you (the client and/or your family) learn how to better manage the symptoms and behaviors you experience while developing and maintaining positive coping skills. I do believe that we are not our circumstance(s) nor our diagnosis; rather a diagnosis just helps us put a name to the things we are experiencing. I have a passion for supporting my clients, especially with regard to helping women realize/remember their strengths and resiliency through deep processing of  previous and present adversities (such as self confidence, relationship issues, boundaires, stress, abortion grief/voluntary pregnancy termination grief/aftercare, sexual assault) while helping the client continue to succeed in life and live in the moment.
